Conflict Theory
Conflict theory
Conflict theory refers to the view that “human behavior is shaped by interpersonal conflict and that those who maintain social power will use it to further their own needs.”
Conflict theory came about in the 1960’s with Dahredorf. Data showed that crime and delinquency were much more evenly distributed through the social structure. Crime was being identified more often in lower class environments. Criminologist found that they social context where crime occurs is an important part of crime and social control influences crime. Writings began then to appear to show how the justice system protects the rich and the powerful. I would have to agree that the system is controlled by the powerful whether we recognize it or not. The elite are in power and manipulate their own agendas. The law and many legal institutions are used to keep people of power in power.
